World Book Day – 3 March 2022
March 2022
Sheila Pantry OBE
World Book Day (WBD) changes lives through a love of books and shared reading and is celebrated annually on 3 March 2022.
The mission is to promote reading for pleasure, and especially offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. WBD want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them. Designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.
Occupational safety, health and fire information has appeared in books published worldwide for centuries, see titles listed in www.historyofosh.org.uk e.g. De Re Metallica. This was translated from the first Latin edition of 1556. Reprinted 1950. The 1950 edition of De Re Metallica is a complete and unchanged reprint of the translation printed in The Mining Magazine, London in 1912 from the first Latin edition, by Hoover, Herbert Clark and Hoover, Lou Henry. Published USA, New York: Dover Publications Inc. http://openlibrary.org/books/OL14519062M/De_re_metallica

Update your 2022 diaries with training for workers at all levels
Whether you are a manager, director, safety representative, supervisors or worker it is time to
- check out the training needed in your workplace.
- look at the latest additions to the Diary of Events and you will see plans have been made already worldwide well into 2022 offering training courses, symposiums, webinars and conferences by Zoom, Microsoft Teams in many places in the world on a wide range of subjects.
- make sure you do not put off training for yourself and your staff. In these days of tighter budgets perhaps training may be put on the “back-burner” – but think again how you can keep up with the latest techniques and training opportunities.
- remember accidents and ill health in the workplace is costly.
Remember that even if you cannot attend these many events, speakers and organisers are often willing to share their knowledge. Look at the details – where possible, we add in the web sites of these events so you can request further information. And do let me know if you are organising any OSHE events so that these can be added to the OSHWORLD Diary.
